What started simply as meat preservation for travellers in Southern Africa, and ultimately grew into a South African food staple, biltong is now enjoyed daily as the go to snack for millions of people all over the world. It’s unique flavor and style is attributed to the unique process of biltong meat being cured rather than marinated, and air dried, not smoked or cooked. This ensures maximum flavor, and a tenderness that makes it delicious and easy to eat. Zbiltong is the real deal, made with original South African spices, and the same process that has worked so well for 100’s of years.
Biltong and jerky are both dried meats snacks and have similar appearances, but the commonalities pretty much stop there. For starters the taste. Biltong is prepared with a vinegar base and spiced with a coriander, pepper and garlic spice mix. Jerky starts off with a saucy marinade, and usually spiced with sugar and salt.
The process is also different. With biltong being air dried, and prepared with thicker and slightly fattier slices of meat, it generally has a juicier taste and a texture that is softer and easier to eat. Preparing jerky is done with heat, typically from a dehydrator or oven, that leaves it with a drier, tougher and perhaps smokier feel. Which is better? While the argument can be made for both biltong and jerky, our area of expertise is only biltong. So if you’re asking us….its biltong of course!
We think so. But as with all foods, healthy snacks included, it’s always important to remember moderation, and that’s easier said than done when it comes to biltong. Although usually considered a healthy snack being high in protein and low in carbohydrates, over indulging may cause weight gain, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Always consult your doctor if you have any concerns if biltong is for you.
Only high quality, premium, lean and grass-fed glatt kosher beef will do. All meat used in ZBiltong products is 100% beef.
Yes, very much so. Since the main ingredient of biltong is beef, biltong is rich in protein offering approximately 7 grams of protein per oz! If you’re looking for more protein in your diet, whether for a post workout snack, weight loss diet or even to complete your daily protein requirements, biltong is a straightforward and simple choice. No wonder biltong has become the go to snack (or meal) for so many in recent years.
A whole bunch in fact. Some interesting nutritional information about biltong includes high protein content (above), low in fat, naturally gluten free, no sugar added and high in iron and B12.
Sorry, don’t understand the question. Since when is a bag of ZBiltong not finished in one sitting? If for whatever reason you are saving some for later or for someone else, simply close the bag with the built in zipper creating an airtight seal, and leave in a temperature controlled, cool place. For anything longer than two days, either place in the fridge or empty the contents into a brown paper lunch bag and roll it up. But we doubt these steps will be necessary.
